Stan Devoto considers this his top apple choice! This heirloom variety originated as a chance seedling in Tennessee circa 1830, with records indicating it made its way to Arkansas by 1868. Throughout the 1800s and into the early 1900s, this Tennessee native gained widespread popularity as a dessert apple. According to local lore, it was President Andrew Jackson's preferred variety. The fruit features exceptionally firm, crispy flesh with a complex flavor profile—simultaneously sweet and tart with distinctive tannic notes. Cider producers particularly prize this apple! Its excellent storage qualities make it versatile for fresh eating and cooking applications. The tree typically produces fruit biennially and, being among the latest varieties to ripen in Sonoma County, it shows vulnerability to insect damage.
